Invitation to Osaka
Osaka is the second largest city in Japan. It takes two and half hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen super-express. The distance between Osaka and Kyoto, the old capital of Japan, is about 50 km.

Osaka is a historical city. There are the remains of Naniwanomiya, a palace in the 7th century, and Shitennoji Temple which was originally built by Prince Shotoku in the year 593 and is the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan. The Osaka Castle, whose image is seen in the logo of IUCr2008, was the symbolic architecture originally built in 16th century. |

AWAJI PUPPET THEATER

Osaka was one of the trade and culture centers in Edo period (1603-1867). Bunraku, a traditional dramatic puppet performance, was created in Osaka area during the Edo period. Bunraku is the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Humanity together with Noh & Kyogen and Kabuki. Awaji Island is the birthplace of Bunraku. The Awaji puppet performance has been handed down from father to son through the centuries. Puppet Theater with the introductory lecture will be open in the evening on August 25 at Grand Cube Osaka.
